The Conversation that Turns Board Members into Partners (Copy)
Many nonprofit leaders say they wish their boards were more engaged—yet most board members quietly wonder how to help in ways that really make a difference. An annual 1:1 can bridge that gap.
As you plan for the year ahead, consider building individual check-ins with your board members into your regular rhythm. These conversations don’t have to be complex, but they can be one of the most effective ways to strengthen the relationships that move your mission forward.
An annual 1:1 helps you understand what motivates each board member, identify where they’re confused, and discover how to align their strengths with your organization’s needs.

A few prompts can make all the difference.
Reflect: Ask what they found most meaningful about their board service this past year. What moments felt like “wins”?
Look ahead: Explore what they’re most excited about—or unsure of—in the coming year. What kind of support would fuel their enthusiasm and engagement?
Review expectations: Take time to discuss their level of participation over the past year—meeting attendance, event involvement, and annual giving. These aren’t “nice to haves,” but essential parts of their commitment. Then, confirm plans for the year ahead.
Invite action: Ask how they’d like to contribute beyond the basics—through committee service, volunteering, or opening doors to new connections—and come prepared with a few specific ideas.
By making space for these conversations early in the year, you set the tone for a stronger partnership—one built on clarity, trust, and shared purpose. This doesn’t happen by chance. If you’re ready to build a deeper connection with your board, we’d love to help you get there.
